Summer Devotional and Sermon Series
Week 5/Heroes: Abraham
Most people have heard of Sodom and Gomorrah. Some use it as an example for why they like the New Testament (NT) better than the Old Testament (OT) because “OT” God is angry and “NT” God is loving as if God had a change of heart. Read Abraham’s pleas for the place and God’s willingness to spare it if there was any glimmer of hope it. Read Jesus’ words about places that reject Jesus and his disciples. “Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.” Matt. 10:15. God does not change. God loves the sinner but hates the sin. Jesus also rejects those who reject Him after multiple efforts to win them over with love, patience, and kindness. An end will come. It will be great for some and horrible for others. Our job is not to make excuses for people but, like Abraham, our job is to plea for people on their behalf and pray that God turns their hearts. Or, like Noah, “Turn to God and get on the boat!” Nothing could be more loving.
