Daily Devotional Series from Victory Church
Thanksliving Day 9
Think about it… can we truly be defined by gratitude without practicing generosity? When you have good news, you want to share it with everyone and with anyone who will take the time to listen. Such is the same with generosity as out of a grateful heart, flows the spirit of giving. A few years ago, we started seeing the words “Pay it forward” all over social media. This is not a new concept… as the above scripture illustrates. We are admonished to share our blessings. Matthew 10:8 tells us that those who have freely received should freely give.
It is easy this time of year to feel the spirit of generosity. Food banks are filling up, the bell ringers will soon be on every corner, toy and clothing drives catch our attention. But what about the other 11 months of the year? Does your generosity dry up once the holidays are over? My sister shared with me how her church made “blessing bags” which are zip-loc bags with simple things such as tissues, hand sanitizers, granola bars, a gift card for McDonalds etc. She carries them in her car to be given to someone she may encounter who needs a blessing. What a simple act of generosity that can mean the world to someone in need.

“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;his righteousness endures forever.” He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!” – 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 English Standard Version (ESV)
