Daily Devotional Series from Victory Church
Thanksliving Day 26
What a word picture these verses paint! Can you visualize someone sitting on the very precipice of the roof of their house or choosing to live in a dry, sandy, hot desert just to avoid spending time with their spouse who is bitter and complaining and quarrelsome?
These verses use the word “wife” but I choose to view that person as anyone who has an ungrateful and grumbling heart. If we expand the scope of these verses, we can see how this would apply to our workplace as well as to family relationships. No one wants to spend time around someone who is constantly complaining or grumbling. The destructive power of being bitter and difficult to live with is very potent.
But, on the flip side, if one of the blessings of a grateful heart is that we are generally happier people, it would follow that gratitude makes those who live or work with us happier too. Proverbs 16: 24 tells us “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
Do you know someone like that person who is sitting on the rooftop or is wandering in the desert? As I write this today, I think of the child in school (or the co-worker) who has trouble making friends and sits alone in the lunchroom to avoid the taunts of his classmates. He is like that person on the rooftop. What kind words can you share with them today?
