Daily Devotional Series from Victory Church
Thanksliving Day 10
Look at the verses above… what blessings in your life are hidden from your eyes or ears? Things that are blessings that are shown to you only by not showing up? Confusing thought, yes; but true all the same.
Have you ever heard the expression “there but for the grace of God go I?” It is said to have been coined by John Bradford, an English reformer in the sixteenth century in reference to a group of prisoners being led to their execution. He was recognizing that others’ misfortune could be his own if it weren’t for the blessings and the grace of God.
What can you thank God for that has NOT HAPPENED in your life? Maybe for the alarm clock that did not go off in the morning that caused you to leave the house later than usual only to discover that by being late, you missed a terrible accident on the freeway? Or for a medical issue that was misdiagnosed and was much less severe than first thought? Or maybe it is a relationship that ended that led you to finding just the right mate for you? When you look at these in the “rear-view” mirror of your life, you can see them for what they are… “invisible blessings.” Things to be thankful that God spared you from.
“Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:6-11 English Standard Version (ESV)
