Thanksliving Day 1
In 1863, President Lincoln established the 4th Thursday in November as a National Day of Thanks and the holiday known as Thanksgiving Day was born. In just a few weeks, we will recognize that day as we sit down at a table laden with food, fold our hands, bow our heads to say a prayer of thanks, and then fill our plates and enjoy a veritable feast. Conversation will flow and the food will be savored as we celebrate the holiday with friends and family.
Giving thanks as we join together on Thanksgiving Day is easy, but does this mean we are to be grateful only on that particular day since it has been set aside and named as such? The passage for today admonishes us to “give thanks in all circumstances.” It does not say just on the 4th Thursday in November or when we feel like it, but rather, on every day and in every situation. An attitude of gratitude takes the willingness to recognize and to express appreciation for the benefits we have received from God and from others. Note this is a two-step process… first acknowledging our blessings and then expressing our appreciation. This is not always easy and it is definitely an intentional act on our part.
I challenge you to pause and to think today about your own attitude of gratitude…
-Do you look at the world through grateful eyes and consistently express your thanks to God and to others?
-Do you know that you have been blessed but don’t often stop to express your gratitude?
-Do you have a long way to go to develop a lifestyle of giving thanks?
-Or are you a whiner who tends to focus on your problems and frequently complain to God and to others?
True gratitude should be a natural response to the grace we have been given, but I have to say I consider myself to be mostly the second one on the list above. I would like to be able to praise God and be grateful in all circumstances and my prayer is that through writing and sharing these daily readings, I will develop more of that attitude. Are you ready to join me in this 30-day quest?
1 Thessalonians 5:18 New International Version (NIV)
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
