Daily Devotional Series from Victory Church
Flourish Day 2
Have you ever thought about your purpose in life and the plans that God has for you? Discovering and living out our purpose is the 2nd of the “P’s” in growing as a Christian.
Rick Warren, the pastor of Saddleback Church in Orange County, wrote the book “A Purpose Driven Life” which became a best-seller almost overnight. The book explored the question of “what on earth are we here for.” The immediate success of the book would seem to indicate that people are searching for purpose and for meaning in life. That real meaning in life comes from knowing our true calling and our reason for being. But how do we find that purpose?Think about these questions:
- What are your gifts and your strengths? What are you good at?
- What are you passionate about? If money were no issue, what would you do with your life?
- Where do your gifts and your passions intersect? Maybe that is where your calling is?
In Ephesians 4:11, the apostle Paul tells us that Jesus gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to the church. Do you feel that God has gifted you to be any of these? I know I am not a prophet or an evangelist but I can teach. And I feel called to share my writing, so that is where my gifts and my passions have intersected. The wonderful thing about a church community is that we all come together with different gifts, different callings and different purposes and from that community, we can share God’s love and His Word.
Our ultimate calling as Christians is found in Matthew 28:18-20. “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Aside from any vocation we choose to explore or any dream we choose to chase, we are called to make disciples… to bring the good news to all the world.
Psalm 138:8 Living Bible (TLB)
“The Lord will work out his plans for my life—for your loving-kindness, Lord, continues forever. Don’t abandon me—for you made me.”
