Daily Devotional Series from Victory Church
“Oh Come thou Long Expected Jesus”
The end of the year is approaching as we have turned the calendar page to December. And with the turning of that page, begins the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. As the song goes “there’ll be parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting, and caroling out in the snow.” (Although I doubt we will have snow here in California!) There are gifts to be bought and wrapped, cookies to be baked, trees to be decorated and lights to be hung. We are busy, busy, busy.
But in the the midst of all the busyness of the holiday season, let us take a moment to reflect on the season of Advent… that time in our church calendar when we look for the coming of our Savior as the promised Messiah. We observed “Christ the King” Sunday last week and the scriptures pointed us toward the future when Christ the King will come again. While the season of Advent is one of anticipation, it also points us backwards as we remember His coming as that baby in the manger. That gift of a Savior should be our focus as we prepare our hearts for Christmas.
The word “advent” means arrival and is derived from the Latin word “adventus” which means coming. You may be looking forward to guests who are coming for a holiday visit. Or you may be looking forward to the arrival of a special gift from a loved one. Whatever you may be waiting for, there is a sense of excitement and of wonder as you await the arrival of the anticipated guest or gift.
Our passage today tells us that Jesus, the living Word, has always been…but He was not always here with us. The hearts of God’s people longed for His arrival; He who would satisfy their deepest yearnings and who would fulfill the promises of a Savior coming to rescue them. Advent ignites our own longings for Jesus as we remember the prophets of the Old Testament who foretold the coming of the Messiah. The baby born in such a humble fashion is the promised one who now is here with us. Come let us adore Him.
