Living In The Moment
Daily Devotional Series - Day 18
Reading: You just read it. Short for today!
In my bible, I have written a note to myself saying, “The Oppression of Bureaucracy.”
If you’ve ever sat down at the County Health Department, the Social Security Office, the DMV, Department of City Planning and Development, or any other government run program, it is next to impossible not to wonder if anyone actually cares. (I like to give the frontline people who work there a pass because they are typically hit with wave after wave of people with problems under an impossible workload. It’s hard to be happy and helpful.)
That’s why who is at the top is so important. The Teacher sees, that without God, people turn to their own self-interests in spite of the obvious suffering of others. But with God, it’s a different story.
“42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:42-45
“If you see the poor oppressed in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.”
