I Am... Day 5
Road trips from our childhood involved folded paper maps that were in the glove box or later, spiral bound Thomas Brothers guides that were tucked under the front seat. Those were essential items when traveling by car in case we took a wrong turn somewhere along the way. In 2008, my sisters and I took a road trip from Phoenix to St. Louis following as much of the old Route 66 as possible. My older sister mapped our trip well in advance and discovered that the guidebooks for traveling Rte. 66 were all written with the starting point in Chicago and heading west. But we were traveling east! This made for some frustrating but laughable moments as we sometimes realized we were on the wrong side of I-40 or were heading in the wrong direction. We joked that we needed to read the book from back to front in order to safely reach our destination. Most cars are now equipped with an internal GPS system where we can type in the address of our destination and a soothing, kind voice will guide us step by step along the way. I have to admit, though, that I find it humorous that when you need to make a U-turn, the GPS will tell you to “turn left and then turn left.” It seems much simpler to just say “make a U-turn.”
When I think of Jesus as the “Way” I am reminded of those guidebooks and those maps. Without them, we would certainly would not have found our way to St. Louis. I like the mental picture of Jesus walking along the road to heaven and leading us on our way. A Pied Piper of sorts but with a glorious destination that He wants us all to reach. In order to arrive safely, we have to follow Him. As humans, we often want to find our own way and take what could be dangerous detours but when we are lost along the way, He is there to guide us back onto the path.
The second claim that Jesus makes in John 14:6 is that He is the Truth. The word truth in this passage is translated from the Greek word altetheia which means not merely spoken truth but the truth of an idea, reality, sincerity and straightforwardness. My take from this definition is that Jesus is real… not just a person who lived 2000+ years ago but He is who He says He is.. The son of God. In John chapter 8, Jesus said …” and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Free from what? Freedom from sin… freedom from the lies that Satan whispers to us… freedom from condemnation… freedom from death. Knowing Jesus sets us free.
Looking back into the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 30:19-20 tells us “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you LIFE and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose LIFE, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days…” Jesus offers life… real life… meaningful life.
So keep in mind that when you are lost and feel you have strayed from the Way, the Truth and the Life, finding your way back is as simple as making a left turn and another left turn.
