So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. John 8:28 (NIV)

Reading: John 8
Jim Jones. David Koresh. Marshall Applewhite. Joseph Smith. Harold Camping. Jesus? I know that it is hard to put Jesus in such a category but how would you react if one Sunday, I would stand up in front of the congregation and declared, “I AM GOD.” Some people might laugh. But if I stuck with the story, eventually I would be run out and rightly so.
At the end of John 8, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I AM!”. Everyone went crazy. I AM is the phrase that God used to describe his name to Moses. One who knows no beginning or end. One who “is”. Many believed him but many people wanted “proof.” When it comes Jesus, many are in the same boat today. Some just put him in the category of “Great Religious Teacher” like Buddha, Confucius, etc. while never addressing Jesus’ claim as “I AM.”
Jesus provided a lot of proof. His words and actions were certainly “godly” if not God. I’ve never met anyone who has had a problem with Jesus and his teachings about how to live. His compassion for the adulteress woman and his words to the crowd is living proof. There is no more “quotable” person in history. Throw in his miracles as proof. Nicodmeus even said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” (John 3:2)
But the most glaring proof? The cross and the empty grave.
