Grace & Truth Day 3

Reading: John 3

Encountering the Grace and Truth of Jesus will challenge your notions on what can and can’t be. Nicodemus, a Pharisee, admittedly didn’t understand Jesus. He knew Jesus was from God but why hadn’t Jesus gone to the Pharisees? They were the teachers of God’s word. Jesus basically said, “God is much bigger than you think. He is not limited to your boxes. You judge people. I save people.” (John 3:16-17)

But it wasn’t just Nicodemus and his buddies. At the same time, John the Baptist was in the middle of his ministry. Jesus was gathering disciples and was baptizing too. John’s disciples felt challenged. They were getting a little territorial. Jesus’ crowd was taking away from John’s. John’s response was different. Instead of getting into a turf war, he invited what was happening because God was coming and God is greater than any of us. He said, “He must become greater; I must become less.”

I don’t know about you but I think we all struggle with purpose at times. The great book and bestseller, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, is a testament to that. We focus our energy on what is MY purpose. What is MY role? What can I do that no one else can? The first line Warren’s book is a classic: “It’s not about you.”

Whether you are a Nicodemus trying to pigeonhole God or involved in a turf war over your life like John’s disciples, the only way you’ll really get down to what He sees or wants in you is to let go of what you know, understand that He is bigger than you, and become less so He can become more.

Today’s Prayer

Dear Jesus, help me to see you for how big you really are. Help me see how you are at work in my life. Forgive me for fighting you. In your name, Amen.
